This tender, unsentimental comedy springs from the unlikely setting of a Jewish old peoples home in London, where Izzie (Ron Moody) is facing up to his last days with no intention of going gently into that good night. Meanwhile his mixed-race grandson Keith (Leyland OBrien) is contemplating a little operation that will confirm his Jewishness once and for all, and refusing to look beyond the comforting daily routine of the home - until girl on the run Kim (Lee Blakemore) walks through the door, and sparks start to fly. This debut feature from a respected documentary maker is a real charmer, always bathed in golden sunshine and kept bouncing along by an excellent traditional jazz score from The Burning Bush, but never glossing over the realities of getting old. There are plenty of telling, humorous details, a colourful gallery of supporting players, and familiar faces Ron Moody (Oscar-nominated for Oliver!) and Rula Lenska are both excellent. |
