PARADISE GROVE is the first cinema film by award-winning writer-director Charles Harris. An often hilarious, often disturbing coming-of-age story set in a Jewish Old Age Home in North London.

Brief Synopsis

Izzie with tape measure

Izzie Goldberg relives his memories of lingerie salesmanship

Nineteen-year-old mixed-race Keith Perry (Leyland O'Brien) wants to be close to his Jewish grandfather Izzie Goldberg (Ron Moody). But Izzie refuses to accept the fact that his grandson is half black.

Meanwhile Keith is searching for his Jewish roots, but Keith's mother (Rula Lenska) is too busy running her retirement home, reliving the Sixties and sleeping with the local doctor to spend quality time with her own son.

The film turns darker as Izzie's health worsens. Unable to face the grim reality of old age, he decides to die, and for the first time in his life Keith finds that his grandfather needs his help. But is he up to providing it?

Paradise Grove is a film with a distinctive and unusual voice. Starting with deceptively gentle comedy, it woos us with a colourful parade of sharply observed characters, each with their own quirks and eccentricities, before building to a disturbing and moving climax with a strong emotional punch.

This is a remarkable feature debut by writer-director Charles Harris, whose previous television work has won awards at Chicago and Melbourne and a special showing at Cannes 2000, beautifully shot in sunlit and burnished tones by Hollywood cameraman Miles Cook, and featuring a memorable "Jewish jazz" sound track by Roddy Skeaping and the Burning Bush, Britain's foremost Klezmer band.

Ron Moody (Shylock and Oscar nominated for Oliver!) has long been popular with audiences, and here he makes a welcome return to the big screen in a leading role.
